The waterways in the state of Berlin are partly the responsibility of the federal government (federal waterways) and partly the responsibility of the state of Berlin (state waterways).

The majority of waterways in Berlin relevant for commercial shipping and tourism are federal waterways, in particular: Spree, Havel and Dahme with the large lakes, Teltowkanal, Landwehrkanal, Berlin-Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal (formerly: Hohenzollernkanal). The competent local authority for the federal waterways is the Berlin Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA). The competent navigation supervisory authority for the state waterways is the Senate Department forTraffic, Mobility, Climate Protection and Environment.
